Our central goal in working with couples is to help them emotional attune to each other, to be Accessible, Responsive and Engaged - A.R.E. To get there, we too, as therapists, must be A.R.E. for our couples. Ruptures are common, repairs essential to maintain emotional attunement and a strong alliance. We do not talk about EFT’s special therapeutic alliance enough. This training will lean into that dance we are doing all the time with our couples - attuning, mis-attuning and then re-attuning to create safety and promote our couples’ ability to take the necessary risks to touch their vulnerability with us and eventually their partners.
A positive alliance is necessary for couples to be able to access and share their vulnerability.
Mis-attunment is common and unavoidable.
The way we repair mis-attunements or ruptures predicts how strong our alliance will be going forward.
Effective repairs strengthen the therapeutic alliance.
EFT requires a special alliance because we ask our clients to go deep into their vulnerability.
Self-of-the-Therapist issues can get in the way of this dance of attuning, mis-attuning and re-attuning.
Following this training, participants will be better able to:
Explain the importance of building alliance and creating attunement in EFT
Demonstrate a solid grasp of empathic attunement
Apply the practice of attunement to move from a performance-oriented to a presence oriented therapeutic stance
Utilize therapeutic presence, attunement and Use of Self to build and maintain therapeutic alliance
Identify and process Self of Therapist blocks to attunement and presence
