This 1-day workshop provides an opportunity for EFT couples therapists to explore Self-of-Therapist learning through didactic presentations and experiential group exercises.
“Self-of-Therapist” is a term to describe the intra-psychic issues that impact the therapeutic process. Self-of-Therapist work involves self-reflection, self-awareness, and self-compassion.
In Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), clinicians help couples identify the dynamics that drive their communication cycle, process their unmet attachment needs, and facilitate powerful bonding events. While doing all of this, we are also attuning to each client individually, as well as tracking interactions between the couple, while simultaneously trying to pay attention to our own internal reactions and behaviors. This is not easy! It is understandable and predicable that we may get lost in the process and mis-attune at times.
“Self-of-Therapist” work can heighten awareness about how our own histories and attachment strategies impact our clinical interventions, as well as increasing options for self-regulation so we can make clinical decisions from a more grounded place.
This workshop will help clinicians:
Identify markers that indicate mis-attunement in session.
Specify raw spots and triggers that lead to dysregulation.
Describe their own action tendencies, perceptions and somatic responses when dysregulated.
Explain how their own history and attachment style influence clinical impressions and impact therapeutic interventions.
Utilize strategies to self-regulate and reorient during session.
Practice self-compassion surrounding SOT challenges.
